It's well known that darker colors absorb more heat from the sun, whereas lighter colors reflect heat. For example, if you're playing an outdoor game in a sport like football, baseball, or soccer, the sun's rays hitting a dark uniform will ultimately make players feel warmer in an already hot environment. This can lead to greater risk of downgraded performance or even heat stroke. As such many teams opt to wear light colors when playing outdoors on a hot day to help them stay cooler.

Psychology

Different colors can evoke different emotions, cultural connectedness, or traditions. For example, blue often evokes a sense of loyalty and trustworthiness, while orange can represent energy and vitality. According to Psychology Today, studies have shown a correlation between teams that wear dark colors and aggressiveness compared to teams with light-colored uniforms. Researchers tested the idea by showing pictures of NFL and NHL team uniforms to research participants and asking them to rate each uniform based on:

• whether dimensions were good or bad
• whether they found the uniform looked timid or aggressive
• whether they perceived the team uniform to be nice or mean

What they found was that darker colors were perceived as more malevolent than lighter. But does wearing a black uniform make a player truly aggressive, and should you rule out dark-colored uniforms for your team? No, but the research does make some interesting connections between colors and competitiveness of a team.
